Wallace Day in Lanark 2014 Slideshow
Scores of characters in the costumes of centuries ago set up their awnings and prepared for battle, keen to display mediaeval weaponry to Lanark’s 21st century inhabitants. But the turnout of the public was very poor.
From the Castlegate, there was nothing to say that time had been rolled back and mediaeval knights were staging fights and demonstrating archery in the park just yards away and the torrential rain probably deterred many.

Hide AdLiving history participants came from all over Scotland as well as Clydesdale for the arena displays and retired Lanark jeweller Peter Campbell ran the come-and-try archery sessions, doing a roaring trade – despite the weather.
There was also mediaeval music and dance, falconry, a children’s workshop making costumes for lords and ladies and local scouts produced decorated shields.
In the streets outside, the Development Trust was running a traditional market. Local organisations such as Freda Parlett’s Lanimer group, and Clydesdale International Twinning Association were helping to boost their funds, while fresh bread and fresh vegetables were plentiful at the start of the morning.
