Over the years, Rangers have faced a lot of quality sides in European competition with some legendary figures having appeared on the turf.
From Ballon d’Or winners to World Cup stars, here are 12 famous footballing faces that have visited Ibrox Stadium.
5. Alessandro Del Piero
Del Piero is considered one of the true greats of Italian football and has spoken fondly of his visit to Ibrox in 1995 and has on record stated that the stadium is one of the hardest to visit in Europe. He played a pivotal part in Italy’s 2006 World Cup success having scored the goal which took them to the final as well one of the penalties against France.
6. Sir Stanley Matthews
Regarded as one of the greatest British players of all time, Matthews made guest appearances for Rangers during World War 2 against Morton and Partick Thistle. In the match against Thistle in 1941, he picked up a Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup winners medal. The Ibrox side weren’t the only team he starred for in Scotland as he also turned out for Airdrie and Morton.
7. Dino Zoff
Dino Zoff along with his Juventus teammates arrived at Ibrox in September 1978. His side were defeated by John Greig’s team 2-1 on aggregate. That win is considered to be one of the most memorable nights at Ibrox. Dino Zoff became the oldest World Cup winner back in 1982 when he captained his side to glory against West Germany.
8. Lothar Matthaus
Matthaus had a very juicy battle against a young Barry Ferguson when his Bayern side visited Ibrox in 1999. He remains the only German player to have been awarded the FIFA World Player of the Year which followed winning the World Cup in 1990. The match at Ibrox finished all square at one goal a piece.
