Young guns triumph in Douglas Park Golf Club tournament

Two young golfers with a combined age of 34 were crowned mens and ladies Douglas Park Golf Club annual champions recently.

Michael Giovannetti (20) and 14-year-old Fiona Rattray have been members of the Bearsden Club for nine and five years respectively, and battled back against more experienced opponents.

Michael defeated Craig Turner on the last green of his 36 hole match, having been four down after the morning round. He also made a bit of history as his dad Franco was also a previous champion - making them only the third father-son duo to do this in the club’s 117 year history.

In a re-run of last year’s final, Fiona founds herself three down after 12 holes to Helen Faulds but put together a brilliant streak to win the next five holes in succession to triumph 2 & 1.

Club Captain Roddy Gillespie said: “We are delighted with the success of both Michael and Fiona who have progressed through the club from beginners to club champions. Junior development is just part of what makes Douglas Park a friendly and family friendly club.”

Youth was the theme of the tournament as David McGeachey beat Danny Ward to become the youngest senior men’s champion at the age of 55. In the Junior Final, Ross Cameron (15) defeated former champ Finlay Watson.
