West’s opening game marred by injuries

West’s opening game of the new season saw them get thumped 119 -5 when they played Marr at Troon.

It had been widely predicted but was still a shock when the final whistle came.

The visitors faced a very well drilled team who have been coming up through the leagues very rapidly.

With a youthful team and many of West’s more experienced players watching from the sidelines injured, it was always going to be an uphill struggle.

Marr ran in their opening try in the first five minutes and carried on scoring regularly until half time.

West held them out for a valiant 10 minutes after the half time break, but Marr scored a number of breakaway tries in the second half.

Despite this West’s Lewis Smith managed a fine try. Sloppy play by the home side was picked up in midfield by Jamie McAuley who went past several defenders and slipped it to Smith on the wing who outpaced the Marr defence. Blair Smith missed the conversion.
