UP and coming young swimmer Lauren Averell became one of her club’s youngest Scottish champions at the recent Scottish Open Championships at Tollcross.
The Milngavie and Bearsden Swimming Club member won gold in the 50m butterfly at the four day event which attracted swimmers from across the country.
Lauren (15) also took the Junior gold medal in the same event, in a time just outside the national age group record.
Her clubmate Kirstin McKinley also produced a fantastic swim to take junior gold in the 100m freestyle.
Both girls then took part in the 4x100m freestyle relay, alongside club members Holly Shearer and Megan Donnelly, where they took bronze behind first placed Edinburgh University and South Aberdeenshire teams which featured members of Scotland’s Commonwealth Games team from Dehli.
These performances helped the club as a whole to finish in a creditable 11th place.
Other club results were: A Finals: Kirstin McKinley 100 free 6th.
B Finals: Lauren Averell ninth in 100 free and third in 50 free; Megan Donnelly ninth in 100f ly; Megan Donnelly first in 200 fly; Kirstin McKinley first 50 frontcrawl, fourth 200 front crawl, fourth 100 fly, ninth 400 front crawl and also Scottish Junior Champion in the 50m freestyle event. Calum Tait was second 200 breaststroke; Jack Thorpe sixth 50 frontcrawl; Julie Williams sixth 50 backcrawl and Julie Williams 10th 100 backcrawl.
In the relays the results were: Girls 4x100m freestyle: - Kirstin McKinley, Lauren Averell, Holly Shearer, Megan Donnelly - Bronze.
Girls 4x200m freestyle relay: Kirstin McKinley, Megan Donnelly, Holly Shearer, Paige Lang - fourth.
