Strong arm Ryan set to turn pro after win

Milngavie strongman Ryan Francis has clinched gold at the British Armwrestling Championships held last month in Preston

The 34-year-old care work was was competing at the British Armwrestling Federation Novice Championship in the left handed superheavy category.

He said: “There was some quite tough opposition, but I have been training quite regularly so was in good condition.”

Ryan was a powerlifter and won the 2012 Scottish championship before turning his attention to armwresting.

He added: “It seemed a logical progresson. I’ve been training with David Scott from Milngavie for about a year-and-a-half.

“He has a good track record of producing winners.”

Ryan was up against five of the top armwrestlers in Britain at the competition and winning has given him the confidence to persue his dream and turn professional.

The athlete is now setting his sights on the New Year’s Cup on January 24.

Ryan said: “This is where I will be taking on the big boys.”

The event takes place again in Preston and Ryan wished to pay tribute to those who have helped him,
