MILNGAVIE sailor Rachel Mawer took gold in the inaugural Optimist dinghy class at the Royal Yacht Association Scotland Spring Championships in Largs.
Racing against 15 other sailors in the under 16 age group recently, the Douglas Academy pupil put in a good performance on the first Saturday of the event, winning all of her three races in a brisk southerly wind.
The following day she had two races in calmer weather - coming second in both of them, but gained top marks overall as she could discard one of her races so finished with a total of five points.
Rachel (13) said: “I’ve been sailing about five years and this is the first big competition I’ve won. It was a bit of a surprise to win but it felt good because I’m quite a competitive person. For a win you got one point and for a second it was two points and so on. The person with the lowest points was the winner.”
The Clyde Cruising Club member has trained at Bardowie Loch on the outskirts of Milngavie since joining two years ago and looks set for a glittering future in the sport.
Last year she was selected for the national junior GBR Optimist sailing team.
More than 70 boats and boards were on the water. After a winter of hard work in their RYA squads, the young sailors had the chance to sharpen their skills on the open water in a competition.
