The 22-year-old delighted all at the school when he struck gold in the 200 metres breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships in London last Thursday.

That followed his achievement in taking silver in the 100m two days previously.

And on Saturday he completed the full set by earning a bronze in the 50m event.

Murdoch’s medal haul was an ideal boost as he prepares for this summer’s Olympics in Rio - but ironically his gold came in an event for which he has not even been selected for Brazil.

He took the title after holding off a late challenge from German world champion Marco Koch, but he won’t be in action over the distance in Rio after only finishing third in the British Olympic trials.

Murdoch has been picked for the 100m, along with Adam Peaty who only beat him to the 100m gold in London by clocking the third fastest time in history.

The Stirling University students was thrilled to add the European 200m crown to the Commonwealth Games gold he won over the distance two years ago.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted, everything went to plan.

“I had to try to stay long in that last 50m, because I knew he [Koch] was coming at me really quick. I just stuck to my guns, stayed disciplined and got my hands on the wall.”
