West of Scotland hope to kick off 2016 on a winning note when they take on Orkney in their opening BT West Division 3 fixture of the year at Burnbrae on Saturday.

West sit fourth in the table and a win would be the ideal start to their push for promotion in the second half of the season.

They lost at Orkney earlier in the season, although they did secure bonus point, but backs coach Andy Douglas is confident his side can get the better of the islanders this time round when they will face the same travelling difficulties in reverse.

He said: “The problem playing at Orkney is that you can’t get on and off the island on the same day. We flew up on the Saturday morning but didn’t get back until the Sunday night and it’s a lot to ask guys with work or family commitments to take on.

“Orkney are a good side but they’ll face the same situation this weekend so hopefully we can take advantage of that.”

Leaders GHK look on course for the title with 12 wins out of 12 so far, but the second promotion spot is up for grabs with West seven points adrift but with games in hand over rivals Dumfries and Haddington and both still to play.

Douglas said: “We’ve had a good start to the season but we have had a lot of injuries so getting the same 15 guys on the pitch has been a bit of a struggle.

“But we have started to get a bit more consistency and got a really strong result at Perthshire in our last game before the break.

“We were in a similar position in the league last year and didn’t go up but hopefully we can manage it this time.

“But we’re just taking it game by game, beginning with Orkney.”
