OLYMPIC hopeful Imogen Bankier and her badminton mixed doubles partner Chris Adcock are through to the quarter-finals of the Yonex All England Open Championships after a great performance in Birmingham on Thursday.
World silver medalist Bankier (24) from Milngavie and Adcock, beat South Korean’s Yoo Yeon Seong and Jang Ye Na 15-21, 21-19, 21-19 to book their place.
This came less than 24 hours after victory over Chinese world champions Zhang Nan and Zhoa Yunlei, despite making a shakey start. They were up against it in this game losing the first game 21-16, but came storming back to level at 21-19 in the second round and then pulled back from 13-11 down in the decider to reel off eight points in a row before taking the 105-minute contest 21-19 on their fifth match point.
Bankier and Adcock are now 17th in the world rankings and their nearest rivals for the only mixed double spot at this summer’s Olympics, Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork are 19th. Both will be keen to climb up the rankings before the end of Olympic qualifying, which finishes with the Indian Open Superseries in late April.
