Cycling sensation Katie Archibald is heading to
Colombia for her Track
Cycling World Championship debut for Scotland
The Milngavie athlete (19), who began cycling competitively less than two years ago, will head to Cali alongside the likes of Laura Trott and Becky James in a squad hoping to eclipse last year’s medal tally of nine, including five golds.
Katie, who has been selected as an SSE Next Generation ambassador, said: “It doesn’t really feel real until you get family and friends texting you. I’m feeling a lot of excitement and I am not embarrassed to say that I am pretty nervous – it will be my first World Championships. This is what everyone will judge me on.
Katie’s training programme has been intense, but she admits nothing can prepare you for actually taking part.
She added: “You do as much as you can in training, but it is so hard to replicate the racing environment – the emotions you are going to be feeling and the nerves,”
The teenager didn’t start competively racing until 2012 and received a lot of support from the SSE Next generation, who are in partnership with SportsAid to support the sporting stars of the future as part of their commitment to Glasgow 2014 through their ambassador programme.
