Marr prove too strong for West at a rain sodden Burnbrae

West entered the second half of the season with the hope of getting even against Marr who beat them 119-5 in the first game of the season- but lost 45-12 in the RBS league A.

West made a good start but missed a kickable penalty. Marr then had a penalty and Rory McGee converted.

However the hosts had good line speed and Richard Tran made the first of several good breaks, only for the Marr defence to recover. McGee scored another two penalty to bring the score to 0-9.

West then overhit the kick off and Marr passed the ball out wide from their resulting halfway scrum and several passes later Connor Bickerstaff scored to make it 0-14. McGee converted. The opposition midfield found a hole in the home defence and Gregor Ness scored an unconverted try in the corner.

Marr then cleared a West attack but missed touch. Several West passes found Fintan Cuthbertson who ran past three defenders to score an excellent try in the corner. It was unconverted and the half time score was 5-21.

After the turn-around West’s Ross MacAulay was sin binned for a no-arm tackle and McGee slotted over the resultant penalty to make it 5-24. West did well with 14 men, pushing Marr back at times and only conceding more points near the end of the yellow card period when Angus Johnson grounded from a rolling maul. McGee added the extras.

With the rain making play quite difficult neither side could make much headway. After some West pressure, it was Marr’s turn to go down to 14 men when Stephen Adair saw yellow. Marr increased their lead, though, when Connor Bickerstaff - part of Marr’s excellent and rapid back line - picked up a West fumble and ran the length of the pitch, beating the chasing West defenders, to score. McGee converted for the visitors to bag the bonus point.

Their fifth try was a bit of luck. It bounced bounced kindly off a West defender’s back and the resulting pass found McGee who scored and converted.

West got a well deserved consolation try when Cammy McClymont grounded a pushover try. Blair Smith converted to finsish the scoring for the day.
