Western Wildcats 2
National League Division 1
With both teams joint league leader, this Auchenhowie derby clash was a fixture high on excitement and action.
Kelburne were quicker off the mark with a pacey start scoring in the third minute.
The Wildcats hit back with an equaliser in the 5th minute. Vishal Marwarha forced the ball over the line courtesy of a deflection from a defender’s stick.
A midfield battle developed between Wildcats Niall Sommerville, Andrew Sinclair and Marwha and the visitors Nelson, Christie and Bremner. A solid defence restricted Kelburne to set-pieces.
However Kelburne went into the lead in the 20th minute when Scott Sutherland fired into the net to go into half time 2-1 up.
A disastrous 10 minute period early in the second half snuffed out a comeback from Wildcats. First, Bremner converted a scrappy corner routine to give the Paisley side a two goal advantage. Then, minutes later, a through ball from Bain was met by Lee Morton who placed a delicate finish under Cats keeper Gavin Sommerville.
Kelburne were 4-1 up but the Wildcats fought right to the end, thwarting Kelburne on a number of occasions and pulling a goal back to warm the hearts of the Wildcats faithful on the sidelines. Scott McCartney rifled a shot past goalkeeper Ben Rennie and into the top corner.
Coach Harry Dunlop, reflecting on a frustrating afternoon, said: “There was a difference in pace between the two side. Kelburne, who have recently competed in Europe, looked to get the ball in play quickly, whereas we were a little off the pace by comparison. The key, though, were the penalty corners and we will be working hard to improve these on the training field this week”.
