A talented young golfer has become the youngest person ever to win Hilton Park Golf Club’s gents’ championship finals.

At only 16, James Sutherland competed in the Milngavie club’s classic 36 hole match, beating title defender Wullie Gordon at the second last hole 2 and 1.

In the morning James - who won the junior club championships in 2011 and 2012 - played over the Hilton course and the Allander course that afternoon.

General manager Craig Bell said: “A subsequent check of the club’s archives, has shown that James is the youngest ever club champion, and the first ever junior member to win the title.

“Wullie enjoying a two hole advantage over James, at the end of the morning round, but in the afternoon round, James won the first four holes to reverse the score and take the lead. But Wullie recovered by winning two of the next holes for the match to be all square at the turn.”

However James, who has played in the senior team since he was 14, gradually took control of the back nine in the afternoon to close out the match in an exciting finish at the second last hole.

As well as being a very good golfer Mr, Bell added: “He is a very confident young man who is very well mannered and always helpful when you ask him to play for the club in any competitions.”
