WORLD silver medalist Imogen Bankier and Robert Blair helped Scotland get off to a stunning start at Badminton’s Sudirman Cup World Team Championships in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

Bankier from Milngavie teamed up with Blair in the mixed doubles to win a gripping battle against Vladimir Ivanov and Nina Vislova 21-15 12-21 24-22 after saving a match point at 21-20 in the decider.

Although Russia got their first point when Ivanov and Sozonov narrowly beat Blair and Paul Van Rietvelde, Scotland had the last word when Kirsty Gilmour and Bankier each claimed their second victory of the day, one when they teamed up to beat Tatjana Bibik and Anastasia Chervaykova 21-15 21-17.

Sweden beat the USA 3-2 in the other group match but Scotland have already put themselves in a strong position to top the group. They face USA on Tuesday night and Sweden on Wednesday night.

BADMINTONscotland Chief Executive Anne Smillie, who is in Kuala Lumpur, said: “This was just the start we wanted. It was a terrific performance by all the squad and will give them a lot of confidence going into the next two matches.”
