Milngavie’s Imogen Bankier had to settle for a bronze medal in the women’s doubles at the INTERSPORT European Championships in Kazan, Russia on Saturday.
The Scotland star and her Bulgarian partner Petya Nedelcheva gave top seeds Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl a real fright before the defending champions won a three-game battle.
Bankier and Nedelcheva stunned the Danes by taking the first game 21-12 - the first pair to take a game off their opponents this week. But then Pedersen and Rytter Juhl hit back to level the match 21-13 and asserted themselves to clinch the 52-minute contest 21-7.
Bankier, who also won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles two years ago, can take this week’s form into her forthcoming challenges, not least the Commonwealth Games in July when she will partner Scotland team-mate Kirsty Gilmour at Glasgow 2014 before tackling the world championships in Copenhagen at the end of August.
