Greenock Wanderers 28
RBS Championship A
West’s final home game of the season proved a frustrating afternoon at Burnbrae.
Although the home side had much of the initial pressure a succession of handling errors stopped them scoring.
It was Greenock who took the lead with a break out of defence finding an overlap with full-back Leigh Tyree scoring. The conversion was missed.
Another Greenock break lead to a 5m scrum when West cleared it over their own line. Greenock peeled off the back of the scrum and Scott Black scored. Again the conversion was missed.
West brought more pressure to bear on the Greenock defence and were awarded with a penalty scored by Ross MacAuley to make it 3-10. Greenock then missed a penalty of their own but they were now in the ascendancy and flanker Anton Ward scored in the corner unconverted to go into the turnaround 15-3 down.
There was more success after the break. A good move led to a West penalty taken to touch and three phases taken off a driving maul led to Jamie MacAuley scoring. Ross MacAuley converted.
Greenock then won a penalty 10m out and had their only successful kick of the day to go ahead 18-10.
West hit back after Anton Ward was yellow carded and Angus Thomson scored in the corner unconverted off the resultant tap penalty.
The home side were competing well at this stage but a sweeping move and a missed tackle saw Greenock score in the corner. The conversion again was missed, but the bonus point was in the bag.
Greenock scored their fifth try before the end when they passed wide to Scott Black after a break from defence to finish the scoring.
West competed well in the forwards but Greenock had the edge in the backs, which made all the difference. West now have one more game this season away to Dalziel on March 22.
