In only her third marathon the 35-year-old crossed the line in a time of 2 minutes 47 seconds with only two other women ahead of her.

Kenya’s Eddah Jepkosgei clocked 2:39.53 to take first place with Kilbarchan AAC’s Hayley Haining runner-up in 2:43.03.

Katie, whose only two previous marathons were at Liverpool in 2012 and Manchester in 2014, said she was thrilled with her unexpected success.

She said: “My only aim was getting a time somewhere around three hours, but on the day conditions were perfect and everything went well.

“It did start to get a bit warm near the end but overall I didn’t have any great problems and managed to beat my previous best by about ten minutes.

“The first two were well ahead so there was never any chance of catching them but they are well established international athletes and just to get close to them was amazing.

“I managed to overtake the third placed runner with about two miles to go and finished about a minute ahead so I was delighted with that. It was so unexpected.”

Meanwhile 49 Garscube Harriers turned out for their club championship race in last week’s Dumbarton 10K.

First home for the club, and fifth overall, was Del Young in 32:34. And in the ladies’ race Lesley Chisholm continued on form to finish second - first vet - in 36:33.

The race was the third in the Polaroid 10k race series and provided a third ladies team win for Garscube.
