A RISING star in the golf world looks set to make his mark in the sport after a string of recent successes.
On the back of a very good season Cameron Kirkwood (15) has been selected for the prestigious Scottish Golf College which is only open to a select few young up-and-coming players.
The highlight for the teenager, of Tiree Gardens, Bearsden, was winning both the Junior and Gents’ Johnstone Cup at Bearsden Golf Club where he has been a member for eight years.
According to the Glasgow Gaelic School pupil, pictured right, this is the first time a golfer has won both tournaments in more than 10 years.
In the Gents’ final, Cameron beat best friend and next door neighbour Ewen Ferguson (15) on the last hole with a 37th hole eagle two after they finished level on three over par after 36 holes.
Ewen in turn beat his dad Mark in the semi-final.
Cameron said: “Winning both tournaments has not happened in the last 10 years. This was a great result and I was selected for the Scottish Golf College partly on my results this year, but also after attending a skills day at St Andrews Golf Range.
“This is a good stepping stone for me. It gives me a better opportunity to play for Scotland one day.”
Cameron’s ultimate goal is to secure a golf scholarship to America and hopefully turn professional after that. His immediate goal however is to do well in three up coming winter series tournaments.
He added: “I need to come in the top eight in all three of the winter series to progress.”
