National League Division 1
It was a long awaited return to outdoor league action for Wildcats on Saturday at Auchenhowie as with a well deserved victory against Dundee.
A stodgy first half belied the gulf in league positions however, with an obdurate Wanderers rear-guard stifling the game and keeping scoring opportunities to a minimum.
Western took some time to settle in and it took them until the 29th minute to break the deadlock when skipper Niall Sommerville drilled his shot into the net.
With a slender lead at half time, Western were expected to add to add to their score, but instead it was Wanderers who looked more dangerous. Fortunately for the Milngavie side, stand-in keeper Dave Whiting was up to the challenge, snuffing out 4 scoring chances with some solid goalkeeping.
Then rising star Luke Cranney made it 2-0 with a wonderstrike from the top of the D. The reverse stick shot sailed into the top corner of the net and propelled Western firmly into the driving seat. Goals followed from Clunie, Harwood and McCartney followed as Western exerted pressure.
A late consolation goal for the Dundee side was the only blot on Western’s second half copybook.
This will give the squad confidence going into next week’s Glasgow derby against Southside outfit Clydesdale HC.
