A TEENAGE snow sports star from Bearsden has been named British Champion at a national competition.
Danny McCormick (19) was the overall winner picking up gold at the British Indoor Championship at the British Snow Tour competition, which took place in SNO!zone in Castleford, south west of Leeds.
The event is aimed at individuals of all ages and awards snowboarders and freestyle skiers who demonstrate their skills over a complex course.
The first year Dundee art student claimed top place in the male British Championship event for snowboarders and also was given first place for the ‘Jib Master’ for his category, winning £100 plus a five night fully catered stay at Chalet Montana in Morzine, France.
The champion has earned prestigious world-ranking points which will help him when he competes in the BRITS Championship next year in Switzerland.
The former Bearsden Academy pupil said: “It was quite tough because the standard was really high.
“You had four qualifying rounds and in the final there were four runs that counted.
“The judges wanted to make sure you were not a one trick pony and that you could string together a series of tricks.”
Danny’s younger brothers, Matt (14) and Chris (13) won gold in the snowboard youth category and bronze in the skiing youth category respectively
Chris’s medal was even more impressive because he was the youngest competitor in his section.
Sarah Porteus, SNO!zone marketing manager, said: “This competition is all about nurturing young snowsport talent and having fun, and we believe that’s key to the future of British snowsport.
“Danny has proved himself to be among the best of British snowboarding talent. But all our sponsored riders have done incredibly well at this year’s competition.
“We predict that Danny will go on to win many more competitions over the next few years.”
All three brothers have been selected for Team GB, although college commitments have meant that only Matt and Chris will take the offer.
But the trio will be competing at the British Snow Tour Invitational at Earl’s Court, London in two weeks.
