Morrisons has announced a new scheme that will allow customers to buy fruit and vegetables at the end of their shelf life for a bargain price.

The ‘Too Good to Waste’ box will be packed full of one kilogram’s worth of fresh produce that has reached it’s ‘best before’ date, but has been checked carefully and deemed perfectly good to eat.

The boxes will be sold for just £1 in every Morrisons branch nationwide. The supermarket hopes the initiative will encourage customers to eat more fruit and vegetables, even on a tight budget.

What will be in the box?

Your Too Good to Waste box could include a wide assortment of fresh fruit, salad and vegetables, although it won’t feature products that need to stay chilled, such as berries or prepared vegetables.

Each Morrisons store stocks a minimum of over 75 varieties of fruit, over 80 sorts of vegetables, and over 50 types of salad – all of which could all appear in the box.

“We’ve listened to our customers who said they don’t want to see good food going to waste,” said Drew Kirk, Fruit & Veg Director for Morrisons.

“So we’ve created these boxes and every day we’ll fill them with a wide selection of produce at risk of being thrown away. Because produce may be unusual and varied, customers can also try some new and exciting dishes at home without having to spend a fortune.”
