St Joseph’s Primary School were ranked number 55 out of 180 primary schools in the UK which took part in The Big Pedal (www.bigpedal.org.uk) recently.

Primary school and nursery children of all ages cycled and scooted to school and racked up almost 800 journeys in the two week period from March 3 to 14.

Mrs Rice, headteacher at St Joseph’s said: “This year’s Big Pedal has been a terrific success and we are delighted with our position in the event.

“Many of our pupils already scoot or cycle to school each day and it was great to see such a great strength of support from parents who jumped into the saddle to cycle to school with their children.

“The children also took part in lots of other activities such as lessons about road safety and road quizzes.

“Our P5,P6 and P7 pupils got a special bike maintenance tutorial from a member of The Glasgow Bike Station and younger pupils in P1-4 were given the opportunity to practice the cycling and scooting skills in the playground”.

The Big Pedal fortnight was rounded off with a whole school assembly which included a raffle of some bicycle themed cakes by talented young bakers.

Children as young as three also took part in the initiative - scooting and pedalling to the campus in North Campbell Avenue, Milngavie.
