Time is running out for people to close their bank accounts with East Dunbartonshire Municipal Bank.

There is just a month to go until the bank ceases trading on Friday, February 13, and there are still approximately 2,000 accounts open.

All customers have been sent reminder letters with details of the timescales and the options available to them.

However, a number of the letters have been returned as account holders have moved and failed to pass on their new address details to the bank.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie is urging customers who haven’t yet closed their accounts to make arrangements to do so as soon as possible as any unclaimed funds will, in due course, be transferred to the Crown.

Councillor Geekie said: “There is just over a month to go until the Bank ceases trading and we are keen that people come in to close their accounts and claim the money that is theirs.

“Extensive efforts have been made to trace all account holders but if you know someone who may have a Municipal Bank account and has moved away from the area then I would urge you to tell them to get in touch.

“We have worked closely with partners and alternative service providers to support customers with alternative arrangements and advice on other options for banking can be provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau who can be contacted on 0141 775 3220.”

Help is also available at the bank’s branches in Kirkintilloch, Bearsden and Lennoxtown or by telephone via our customer services team on 0300 123 4510 and a list of frequently asked questions related to the closure is

available on the Municipal Bank webpage.
