Both clubs cater for Baldernock Primary School pupils and make it possible for working parents to organise childcare in a familiar environment for their children.

Penny McElhinney, chairperson of the playgroup, said: “We’re delighted about the £7,822 funding as it will ease the financial burden on the playgroup as we get the service up and running.

“It will also enable us to bring in sessional workers for fun and educational sessions such as sport and music, as well as buying extra equipment for craft and gardening activities.

“The clubs are convenient for parents to drop off and collect their children around their working hours.

“There is a real shortage of childcare providers in rural East Dunbartonshire so this is an essential service.

“Baldernock Playgroup is also celebrating another successful care commission review so the future is looking very bright despite ongoing concerns about the school and playgroup.”

Baldernock Primary School is currently under review by East Dunbartonshire Council.

The council first revealed its ‘preferred position’ to merge Baldernock Primary with Torrance Primary inMarch 2013.

But the local authority was unable to act until the Scottish Government’s Commission on the Delivery of Rural Education had delivered its findings, which has still not happened.

It was one of a number of prospective school mergers to counter falling school rolls across East Dunbartonshire.
