Plans to revamp the Bearsden Cross shopping area were approved by The Town Council, but there was a stipulation that they should be kept informed of how each stage of the development was going.

There were concerns that a new licensed hotel could have dominated the town centre.

Baillie W H Cumming said: “We will have to watch the developers (County and District Properties, Ltd) do not build the hotel, then for reasons outwith their control become unable to complete the rest of the development.”

The new scheme had provision for 44 shops and 36 houses. The tallest building on the site was the hotel. There was also provision for car parking spaces for more than 100 vehicles in an area inside the shopping precinct.
