A CAMPAIGN is underway to stamp out the menace of loan sharks.
East Dunbartonshire Council is getting behind a drive to stop illegal money lending.
As part of the campaign, Council Leader Rhondda Geekie is encouraging those who know of loan sharks operating in the area to report them.
She said: “Loan sharks can ruin the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.
“They are unscrupulous, charge exorbitant levels of interest and use threats, intimidation and violence to ensure they get payment.”
The national camping is supported by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, COSLA, the Scottish Illegal Money Lending unit and local authorities.
People who know of loan sharks operating in their community are being encouraged to report them, in confidence, by calling 0800 074 0878, by text to 60003 or through the campaign website www.loansharks.org.uk
Councillor Geekie added: “If anyone finds themselves in financial difficulty, particularly when the impacts of Welfare Reform come into effect, I would urge them to seek advice and guidance from legitimate sources such as Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
“If anyone in approached by a loan shark they should report them immediately.”
The national campaign will be running over the coming weeks and is being promoted through the council’s community hubs and on the council website www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk
