Ryan tunes up for fiddlers rally

Bearsden Fiddlers are thrilled that a talented young accordion player from Milngavie is going to perform at their Fiddlers Rally on November 22.

Ryan Corbett (15), is in his fourth year at the Music School of Douglas Academy and recently started attending the ‘Junior Conservatoire’ at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

He is looking forward to playing at the event in Milngavie Town Hall and said: “I enjoyed playing with the Bearsden Fiddlers at last year’s Rally and at the MOD in Paisley Abbey so I feel very privileged to be asked to play solo at this year’s Rally, they’re a great group of musicians.”

He started piano and violin lessons at the age of seven and recently passed Grade 8 piano with ‘Distinction’ after studying for four years with Yuliya Keogh then for three years with Jean Hutchison.

He began playing accordion aged 10 and was self taught until he was 14.

He then started lessons with Djorje Gajic who is the head of classical accordion at the RCS and winner of many international accordion competitions.

In 2013 Ryan was awarded the Hugh S Roberton Trophy for the most outstanding under 14 performer in the Glasgow Music festival and in 2014 he won the Traditional and Classical Open Accordion classes, the Baroque Piano Solos and the Composition A class.

Last month Ryan won the ‘All Scotland Senior Classical Accordion Championship’ at the ‘Perth Accordion and Fiddle Festival.’

Ryan enjoys playing accordion at ceilidhs with his brother Sean on drums, having both learned to call the dances and this Saturday (15th Nov.) Ryan and Sean will be supporting ‘Gaberlunzie’ at the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock.

The Bearsden Fiddlers Rally is supporting the charity ‘Children 1st’ and is at 7pm.

Tickets cost £9 for adults Children £2, (includes wine/soft drink), available from Milngavie Bookshop, Purple Edge or at the door.
