A Milngavie based therapist has been awarded for her work using a revolutionary technique to treat chronic pain and sports injuries.
Ruth Duncan, who has run her own private practice ‘The Natural Therapy Centre’ on Station Road for 15 years, learned the manual approach called myofascial release in America.
She is one of the few people in the UK who use this technique and the only person who teaches it at advanced level.
Ruth (46) tutors a variety of professionals including physios, osteopaths, chiropractors and sport and remedial massage therapists.
Ruth explained: “Myofascial release treats the soft tissues of the body (muscles, connective tissue, tendons ligaments and viscera) using kinaesthetic skilled touch to stretch and unravel the tissue restrictions and tightness in the body.
“Soft tissue restrictions do not show up on standard hospital imaging and many patients suffer pain because their pain cannot be diagnosed.”
In recognition of her work Ruth was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award for complimentary alternative medicine at the CamExpo trade show in London recently.
Ruth always attends this show, the biggest one in the UK for the industry, but had no idea that she’d been nominated for this award.
She said: “This was a lovely surprise, I was stunned.
“I don’t even know who put me forward for it!
“It’s very prestigious and rewards you for what you’ve achieved during the previous year.”
And Ruth has certainly been busy – she published a book last June as part of a series called ‘A Hands On Guide” and she delivered the first ever lecture in the UK on connective tissue in the body at a conference in Windsor last May.
Ruth added: “I was excited to be presented with my award by a very esteemed Doctor of Oseopathy, Leon Chaitow, as I admire his work greatly. It was an honour to meet him.”
