Urgent structural work on a Kirkintilloch primary school won’t start until April 2016 at the earliest - NINE MONTHS after the school was closed due to safety concerns.

That was the news from last night’s (Thursday, December 3) meeting of East Dunbartonshire Council’s Policy and Resources Committee.

Children from Holy Family Primary School were moved to the former Lairsland Primary building back in August after the stuctural problems came to light.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “We have now reviewed the assessment report on the works required and agreed the procurement process which should see the works begin in April 2016.

“We have been engaging with the Holy family school community throughout the fact finding process that resulted in the full structural survey. I’d like to reinforce our commitment to making every effort to accelerate the remediation process and relocate Holy Family pupils back to their original site.”

The contents of the structural report and the approach to remedial works have also been discussed with the parent council.

Councillor Geekie added: “We will ensure that there is a consistent standard of redecoration throughout the school during the works and we have also discussed improving drainage on parts of the site and exploring the possibility of disabled access.

”We will also continue to liaise with the whole school community and ensure they are kept up to date with progress.”

The full cost of the work is not yet known, but will council chiefs say it will be “met from unallocated budget within the Primary School Improvement Programme capital funds.”

It is not known when the school is likely to reopen.
