Pupils help to promote Games

Students from a total of 16 schools across the local authority have become part of the Young Ambassadors Adistars programme and took part in a conference last month at St Andrew’s High School in Coatbridge to help increase participation in sport and encourage active and healthy lifestyles in their own schools.

The conference focused on what the Adistars had been doing at their schools to promote sport and the upcoming London Olympics. Examples included running, Olympic themed sports festivals, updating notice boards and creating their own Olympic torch relay around local primary schools.

Councillor Jim Logue, Convener of Learning & Leisure Services, said: “The Adistar programme had been a huge success within North Lanarkshire, with all Secondary schools in the authority being involved, and continues to inspire young people from the schools and local community.

“Many of the Adistars are intending on using the experience they have gained through the programme to go onto sports coaching at college and university and some will be hoping to volunteer at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.”

Adistars is designed to encourage young people to strive to create opportunity, engagement and change for other young people.
