The SNP MEP who received a standing ovation from his European colleagues after he begged them not to “let Scotland down” in the wake of the EU referendum is coming to Kirkintilloch.

Alyn Smith MEP is inviting the public to a meeting in the Park Centre, Kerr Street, next month to discuss Scotland’s place in Europe.

It takes place on Friday, November 4 at 7pm and is open to all whether Yes or No, Leave or Remain.

Tea and coffee will be served.

Mr Smith won applause during an emergency debate at the European Parliament in June when he said he was “proudly Scottish and “proudly European”.

The MEP is now currently at the forefront of the SNP’s battle to maintain Scotland’s interests within the European Union.

He said: “I am looking forward to coming back to Kirkintilloch to give some insight into Scotland’s position in Europe and explain the effects of a ‘Hard Brexit’ resulting in Scotland leaving the single market and Scots losing their current rights to live, work and study in Europe.

“All options are being considered to protect Scotland’s economy and safeguard our democratic rights. And, of course, Independence is one of these options.”

Following his talk, Alyn will open up the discussion for audience contributions and will be happy to answer any questions.
