Support for local SNP MSP’s re-election bid

Local MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden Rona Mackay has confirmed that she will be the SNP candidate for the constituency in the upcoming 2021 Scottish Parliament election.

Ms Mackay, who has represented the area since 2016 when she was elected with a majority of 8,100, is the sole nominee and has been selected by members to be candidate in next May’s election.

In Parliament, Ms Mackay has been the Deputy Convener of the Justice Committee since being elected. She also sits on the Education and Skills Committee, the Justice Sub-Committee on Policing and is a Government Whip.

Ms Mackay said: “It has been an absolute privilege to represent the people of Strathkelvin and Bearsden in the Scottish Parliament over the last term, and I’m honoured to have the support of local party members once again.

“If re-elected, I want to secure better results for people in East Dunbartonshire by continuing to work with local councillors and my fellow MSPs and MPs.

“In Parliament, I’ve helped to shape significant pieces of legislation, such as the Children’s Bill, strengthening the voice of young people in our legal system. I’ve also not shied away from criticising the UK Government’s misguided policies, such as the proposal to lower the Small Brewer Relief which will stifle a highly successful sector of the Scottish economy at the worst possible time.

“There is much work to do and if re-elected I will keep working hard for the people of Strathkelvin and Bearsden.

“I am very fortunate to work in a constituency with such a rich array of amazing third sector and voluntary organisations – who have been amazing during the Covid-19 pandemic - and I look forward to continuing my work with them.”
