Giffnock station has received reports of a company calling to offer a free home security upgrade, while asking questions about the current system.

Newton Mearns south councillor Jim Swift contacted police after receiving a call. He told The Extra: “There are so many scams going on that I think it’s important to get the message out.

“I have alerted police, and I would recommend that no one discusses their security measures unless it’s with a reputable security supplier.”

Inspector Alan Dickson reiterated: “There have been reports of a security survey. My advice is that a reputable company won’t ask for details over the phone.

“Don’t engage cold callers, and if you do need security advice then try to contact a company attached to an industry body.”
