Plea for votes for orchard project at Milngavie Primary School

Milngavie Primary School and Nursery is urging people to help them to win a grant worth thousands of pounds by voting for them.

People will be asked to vote in three local Tesco stores - Milngavie, Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs - next week for their chosen community group or project.

Milngavie Primary and Nursery plans to use the money to create an orchard in the waste ground surrounding the football pitch on Hillhead Street, Milngavie.

They want to make a peaceful and productive haven for wildlife - a space for the children to learn in, and a beautiful place they can share with the community.

Kate Cameron, a parent, said: “Our vision includes planting native species fruit trees and soft fruit bushes.

“The fruit produced will encourage the children to eat healthily and to know where their food comes from.

“It will give opportunities for the children to practise enterprise as well as giving them space to enjoy the natural world.”

Tesco has teamed up with Greenspace Scotland to launch this Bags of Help initiative across Scotland.

The scheme will see three community groups and projects awarded grants of £12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Kate added: “The ground needs landscaping and fences as well as trees and bushes and wildflower meadow seeds.

“Additional money would mean we could add a poly tunnel and an awning to allow us to enjoy and work in the space – even in the rain!

“The largest grant would also mean that we could provide picnic benches for outdoor classes and for the community to use for picnics in the summertime.”

They would also like to provide bat boxes, hedgehog houses and bird nesting boxes to encourage a wide diversity of species to visit the garden.

The public are being asked to vote in store at Tesco (Milngavie, Bishopbriggs or Kirkintilloch) from February 27 until March 6.

They will decide whch community groups and projects should receive the 1st prize of £12,000, 2nd prize of £10,000 and the runner-up prize of £8,000.
