Concillors have approved plans to offer residents permits as part of a delayed town centre parking charge scheme.
East Dunbartonshire Council had planned to bring in town centre parking charges in April this year, in order to help pay for the wardens that were introduced to enforce parking regulations in 2014.
Feedback from a consultation earlier this year showed a need for permit spaces within some car parks where there was a lack of on-street availability and plans were amended accordingly for Kirkintilloch and Milngavie.
This has led to a delay in the advertising of the off-street Traffic Regulation Orders which are a requirement to bringing in charges, but council officers are now in the process of going through the legal process.
Residents living in domestic properties with no allocated parking within town centres who are considered to be detrimentally affected by the introduction of charging will be eligible to apply.
This will be limited at the moment to one per property and there will be a charge to cover administrative costs.
Businesses and employees - including council employees - will not be eligible for permits.
Councillor Alan Moir, convener of development and regeneration, said: “Officers are now progressing the parking permit scheme - helping to ensure that town centre residents are not disadvantaged.
“The permit is not a guarantee of a specific parking space being available for use, but excludes the permit holder from time restrictions and/or charges within that area.”
He added: “It is important to bear in mind that the first two hours parking will be free - with a sliding scale of charges thereafter. Charges will only apply in certain areas - Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5.30pm.
“That will ensure turnover of traffic - making it easier to park in our town centres and encouraging people to shop locally.”
