Milngavie chip shop customers benefit from Madison's baking bonanza for Marie Curie

Madison Dickson (8) only started baking two months ago, selling her cupcakes to staff and customers at Milngavie fish and chip shop, which is run by a family friend, as well as to pals and family.

So far, she has raised over £300 for end of life charity Marie Curie who cared for her great-nana seven years ago, and her parents are matching what she has raised.

Madison, who is from Muirhead, said: “I really enjoy baking. I had never tried it until last February and said to my mum I wanted to have a go.

"I really like the different decorations you can get and all the different colours of icing. My favourite flavour is vanilla and turquoise or purple icing. My friends think my cupcakes are amazing and I came up with the name of Maddie Bakes Cakes, which I love.”

Madison’s great nana Elizabeth died from lung cancer when Maddison was just a toddler.

The little girl’s mum Charlene (35) said: “I was really close to my nana and when I found out I was expecting a girl, the only person I told was my nana – it was our little secret. Then when Madison was born I’d go and visit her every day.

“When my nana became terminally ill and needed palliative care, Marie Curie nurses looked after her at home before she was admitted to the Glasgow hospice. The care and support she received – as well as us – was amazing which is why we are looking to give something back to say thank you.

“Madison has this talent for baking and I’m delighted she’s found something she enjoys as it’s kept her busy during lockdown. We’re so incredibly proud of her.”

Debbie Mooney, Head of Community Fundraising, said: “What a star Madison is! We have fundraisers of all ages, but when a child does it, it’s even more special as they are giving up their precious time, when they could be out playing with friends, to help raise money for us.
