THE Olympic torch relay is coming Bearsden next summer - giving the town the chance to shine.

Selected local people will act as torchbearers in the once in a lifetime event on Saturday, June 9.

The iconic Olympic flame is going to travel 8,000 miles across the UK over 70 days and Bearsden is one of over 1,000 villages, towns and cities which it will pass through.

The list of places involved in the epic London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay was recently announced by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) - the relay is presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in Scotland to devise the route.

East Dunbartonshire Council Leader Rhondda Geekie, said: “This is such exciting news! The people of East Dunbartonshire will have the opportunity to see the Olympic flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay first hand.

“This is a chance for us to come together, enjoy and share the Olympic spirit and mark, in a very personal way, the countdown to the start of the Games. It is a huge honour for Bearsden to have been selected to represent East Dunbartonshire and I know that people from across the area will come out in numbers for what is surely going to be a special day in history.”

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: “We are thrilled to confirm that Bearsden will act as a host location for the Olympic flame, extending an invitation to people in the area to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay during its journey around the UK.

“This is the UK’s moment to shine and I want to encourage people to start planning how they can be part of this and show their support for the inspirational torchbearers chosen to carry the Olympic flame as we count down to the start of the Olympic Games.”

The Olympic Torch Relay will start at Land’s End, Cornwall on May 19.

Bearsden MP Jo Swinson said: “The relay will provide local people with a real opportunity to connect with the spirit of London 2012, while shining a light on the unique community of Bearsden.

“With the inspirational torchbearers soon to be announced, I hope local residents will join together ahead of this proud moment for Bearsden next year and start planning the Olympic flame’s welcome to East Dunbartonshire.”
