New housing ahead for Pollokshaws

The authority has unveiled People Make Glasgow Home, a new housing strategy to tackle growing demand.

Council leader Gordon Matheson said: “The city needs to accelerate housebuilding to meet changing and growing demand.

“The building of these homes will bring tremendous economic and social benefits for the city, with a huge number of jobs and apprenticeships required to deliver new housing on such a scale.”

The plan includes releasing land for the development of affordable homes and helping first-time buyers to access mortgages for areas on the up, as well as turning empty retail units into housing and developing sites for self and custom-build houses.

Some 6,500 of the new homes will be in Transformational Regeneration Areas (TRAs) — a joint partnership between GCC, the Scottish Government and Glasgow Housing Association — with Pollokshaws included in the first wave.

The programme has been rolled out in Maryhill, Laurieston, Gallowgate and North Toryglen already, followed by Sighthill in 2015/16 and the southside site in 2016/17.
