It’s understood that neighbours persuaded Catherine and Joel to jump from an upstairs bedroom window of the semi-detached house to escape the flames.

Joel was caught by neighbours and Catherine, who has Multiple Sclerosis, jumped on to a mattress they’d placed underneath to cushion her fall. It is understood that she broke her leg.

Colin, who is believed to have been found by firefighters in the hallway, was taken to hospital but died a short while after arrival.

He was Catherine’s full-time carer.

Concerned friends and neighbours have now set up a fundraising page to buy clothes and other basic necessities for Catherine and Joel.

Joel was due to start high school tomorrow (Wednesday).

Ali Kerr, who set up the page which has raised £2.490 in just two days, said: “We are looking to raise money for Catherine and Joel who have lost everything in a tragic house fire, including a beloved husband and father who will be sadly missed by us all.

“The money raised will help go towards clothing and necessities needed, this will help rebuild from what has been damaged and lost.

“Catherine is a beautiful soul and would do anything for anyone, she’s always putting others first.”

Tributes and messages of support have also been flooding in online.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is being investigated.
