Local MP Jo Swinson has met with senior Morrisons supermarket executives to discuss the firm’s plans for Bishopbriggs where it owns the vacant former High School site.
In 2013, Morrisons put their plans to redevelop the site with a new store and housing on hold, citing the refusal of planning permission for a petrol station and the difficult financial climate.
Residents have been left in the dark for the past few years, with many concerned that Morrisons seemed to have no intention of enabling this key site in the town centre to be brought back into use.
Ms Swinson said: “My meeting with Morrisons executives was encouraging. I received assurances that the firm are actively working on updated plans for a new store in Bishopbriggs, and that these proposals are likely to be discussed by their board within months.
“When I was previously the local MP this was one of the top issues of concern for people in Bishopbriggs.
“Any redevelopment must fully involve the community in the planning process, and take on board their views. Morrisons must listen carefully to the needs of the community and keep them informed of developments at every stage.
“This vital site at the heart of Bishopbriggs has lain vacant for far too long. I hope this signals the start of a process that will help to revitalise Bishopbriggs town centre.”
