Motorists given cold weather theft warning

POLICE are reminding motorists not to leave their car unattended with the engine running to defrost it in the morning.

While patrolling Milngavie and Bearsden early one morning during the first cold spell of weather this year police officers spoke to more than 20 car owners.

Despite a number of recent warnings, they were still leaving the keys in the ignition and going back into their house while the car warmed up.

Officers went out again recently to carry out early morning patrols and spoke to another 14 car owners who had risked having their car stolen because they left their engines running while the car defrosted.

Constable Siobhan McCandlish from Milngavie police office, said: “This makes the vehicle an easy target. It is not only expensive cars that are being stolen, so do not take a chance and leave your car unattended with the engine running.

“Remember, your insurance will not cover you for a theft in these circumstances.”
