Scotland’s top players start their Commonwealth Games countdown this week when they tackle the Swedish Masters in Uppsala.

Kirsty Gilmour is top seed in the women’s singles while Robert Blair and Milngavie’s Imogen Bankier are No.1 seeds in the mixed doubles.

Bankier and Gilmour will also look to develop their new women’s doubles partnership.

Gilmour goes into singles action still not knowing her first-round opponent after Swiss player Nicole Schaller withdrew.

But her first big tests will come if she faces German fifth seed Karin Schnaase in the quarter-finals and third seed Petya Nedelcheva, the Bulgarian who is Bankier’s doubles partner for the European championships, who is expected to reach the semi-finals.

Kieran Merrilees faces Sweden’s Matthias Borg in the men’s singles with Swedish second seed and Scottish Open Grand Prix runner-up Henri Hurskainen a likely second-round obstacle.

In the mixed doubles Blair and Bankier start with a bye then face a pair from qualifying.

Bankier also has a first-round bye with Gilmour in the women’s doubles but could face last week’s Yonex Estonia International winners Nina Vislova and Anastasia Chervaykova of Russia in the second round.
