Man hurled weight at police vehicle

It shattered the glass and officers inside had to take evasive action to avoid being hit by the weight.

And at Lanark Sheriff Court on Wednesday Shaun Pollock was jailed for nine months.

Pollock (23) admitted culpably and recklessly throwing the dumb-bell weight the previous day, while at 12 Abbeygreen, Lesmahagow.

Depute fiscal A Mitchell said that police officers had taken the woman to the car.

“They then saw the accused run towards the vehicle,” said Mr Mitchell.

“He threw the dumb-bell weight at the passenger side window of the police vehicle and a police officer sitting in that side had to take evasive action to avoid being struck by it.

“The officer said that if he had not moved, it would have struck him on the head.”

The dumb-bell weighed 0.5kg.

A solicitor said that Pollock had recently been released from prison. He had got away from his home in Bellshill and was living at his girlfriend’s house in Lesmahagow.

He had been awakened by the commotion and discovered a number of police officers in the house. They had initially been looking for someone else, but then arrested his girlfriend.

“In his frustration he picked up this object which was lying in the garden and he threw it,” said the solicitor.

“He now accepts what the outcome of this could have been. It is rather fortunate that no-one was injured.

“He does accept that it could have been much more serious.”

Pollock had served a number of custodial sentences, and his solicitor suggested that some form of social work involvement instead might help.

But given the seriousness of the offence, Sheriff Scott Pattison sent him straight to prison.
