Major new housing development planned for Milngavie

A major new housing development is planned in Milngavie that will provide retirement and affordable housing for older people.

The development is planned for an area of land to the west of the fire station on Craigdhu Road, which forms part of a larger five acre site that has been identified as suitable for housing in the local development plan.

Leading retirement developer, McCarthy & Stone, proposes to build 49 retirement apartments, exclusively for people over the age of 60, with access to a shared homeowners’ lounge and landscaped gardens.

The development will be overseen by a house manager and each apartment will have security features, including a link to a 24 hour emergency call service.

A smaller block of 12 affordable housing apartments, for people over 55, is being proposed to be built on the same site by Sanctuary Housing.

Milngavie residents will be able see an artist’s impression and architectural drawings at a meeting next Thursday, September 29, between 2-7pm in Claremont Bowling Club, Claremont Drive, Milngavie. Representatives from the development team will be available to discuss the plans and answer any questions.

Steve Wiseman, managing director of McCarthy & Stone in Scotland, said: “These plans would add to the mix of housing options for older people, helping people to downsize and release family homes for sale locally”.

“Our Retirement Living developments are also proven to benefit communities. Homeowners support local shops and services and we employ a number of companies during the construction process, further boosting the local economy”.

The developers are urging as many people as possible to attend the exhibition to find out more information and give their feedback before a final planning application is submitted.

For those unable to attend the public exhibition, further information can be obtained from McCarthy & Stone’s dedicated freephone information line on 0800 088 4322.
