Major disruption for Biggar drivers as A702 roadworks begin

The work involves is a major resurfacing improvement programme, costing £1.1m to help improve driver safety on the A702 at Biggar.

Temporary traffic signals and a convoy system will be in place for the duration of the work, with a 30 ph speed limit to ensure the safety of the workforce and the travelling public.

Throughout the sections of convoy, a temporary speed limit of 10 mph will be required.

While every effort is being made to help minimise disruption, given the scale of activity, some disruption and delays can be expected. Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, if possible.

“This section of the A702 is used by around 8,000 vehicles every day and the road surface is now worn and requires upgrading,” said Ian Stewart of BEAR Scotland, which will manage the work on behalf of Transport Scotland.

“These works continue Transport Scotland’s investment in the A702 and follow on from a series of schemes carried out over the last few years to help ensure that this vital artery linking Edinburgh to Abington remains in good working order for years to come.” Work will take place from 7am until 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am until 7pm on Sundays.

The works will require the temporary closures of Station Road and Cornhill Road, and diversions will be signposted.

These closures should be short and, where possible, local access will be maintained. Dates of these closures will be advertised.

Ian added that the work had been carefully planned in consultation with South Lanarkshire Council and Police Scotland to minimise the impact to motorists and residents.
