Louise has baked 90,000 ‘buns of mass production’ for soldiers

Louise Bennet started making the tasty treats, which she has named ‘buns of mass production’, in 2003.

She has now posted 90,000 to various locations since then and continues to produce 500 every week.

Her eldest son George (34), who now works in security in South Africa, was a captain with 42 Commando Royal Marines.

He was among the first soldiers who stormed into Saddam Hussein’s Palace in Iraq when British and American troops invaded in 2003.

He also took part in several tours in Afghanistan.

Her other son Matthew (26) is a second lieutenant with the Royal Marines and currently in Norway on a training exercise, which involves swimming in sub-zero temperatures in the sea between ice holes, mountain warfare and extreme skiing.

Louise’s third son, Simon (31), is a doctor. He applied to join the Territorial Army and is now working in orthopaedics in Bristol.

The cakes are sent to seven addresses in Afghanistan, including Camp Bastion, where two soldiers from Milngavie and Bearsden are based.

Louise’s cakes and buns are received by soldiers in the 2 Scots battalion of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

She also sends a batch to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, which is the new home of the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM), the main receiving unit for all military patients injured overseas.

Louise said: “I just want to continue to do something to help all these great guys and girls who are out there facing really tough circumstances.

“My eldest son was in the Royal Marines for 12 years and I constantly worried about him when he was on tour.

“The bun project helped to take my mind off it - I needed to do something constructive.

“He became a father for the first time on New Year’s Eve, so I’m a granny now, which is amazing.

“There were times when I thought that would never happen.

“He had many close shaves, including contracting severe meningitis in Afghanistan – he was airlifted and brought home.

“I wasn’t even sure that he’d make it to his own wedding safely as he arranged it while he was between tours .”
