A COURAGEOUS Bearsden woman will take part in a firewalk to raise money for the Beatson Pebble Appeal.
Insurance underwriter Lorna Macintyre is aiming to raise £500 at the event, which will be held in the grounds of the University of Glasgow on Saturday, October 22.
Each participant will walk barefoot across 20 feet of wood embers burning at 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, after taking part in a training session to help them perfect the technique of walking without injury.
More than 30 people from across the west of Scotland will take part, and organisers expect to raise around £15,000.
The Beatson Pebble Appeal is raising £10million to fund the construction of the Beatson Translational Research Centre, a state-of-the-art cancer research facility based in Glasgow. The development of the centre is a collaboration between the University of Glasgow, the Beatson Institute, Cancer Research UK and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Lorna (51) and four of her colleagues will be taking part in the event, and hope to raise a total of £2,000.
She said: “I’m proud to be supporting the Beatson Pebble Appeal, a local initiative which has the potential to benefit cancer patients all over the world.
“All of the team have friends or family who have been affected by cancer. We’re a bit nervous about walking over hot coals, to be honest, but it’s for a fantastic cause and we’re pleased to be doing our bit to help build the Beatson Translational Research Centre.”
University of Glasgow Scientific Advisor Barry Gusterson said: “Our vision is to be in a position to treat patients in a more tailored way, with customised drugs, targeted treatments and diagnostic options that are less toxic and more effective, so that each cancer and each patient is treated individually.
“Fundraisers like Lorna play an invaluable role in helping us to realise our goals and provide real benefits for cancer sufferers.”
