Two local youngsters, 15-year old Chris O’Leary from Bearsden and 16-year old Murray Webster from Milngavie, are heading to the 2015 UK Finals of the Rotary International Youth Speaks Seniors Competition next month.

Chris and Murray along with fellow pupil 16-year old Alex Gould from Houston are in the High School of Glasgow public speaking team who have just won the Scotland and North of England Regional Youth Speaks Finals.

In the regional finals - the third round of the competition - the High School of Glasgow team were crowned winners, after tough public speaking rounds against teams from John Ogilvie High in Hamilton and English Martyrs’ College in Hartepool.

They now progress to the UK Rotary International seniors finals which are to be held at Brentford School in Essex on May 10.

The Youth Speaks competition was set up by Rotary International to promote “speaking on a public platform as a member of a team”. In the competition, each member of the team plays the role of chairing, speaking on a topic for six minutes and giving a two minute vote of thanks. The team is judged on expression, presentation and appearance.
