Learning disability charity needs your help

The local branch of learning disability charity Enable, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, is appealing for new board members.

The Milngavie and Bearsden branch of the national organisation is run by its members and carers to support children and adults with learning disabilities to live, work and take part in their communities.

The management committee is currently made up of parents of adults with a learning disability and they have a wealth of experience in organising activities and providing support.

Enable works closely with the Tuesday Club at St Joseph’s Primary School in North Campbell Avenue, Milngavie, which is run by East Dunbartonshire Community Education.

Previous annual activities included a Christmas party in Milngavie Town Hall, a visit to see a pantomime at The King’s Theatre, a St Valentine’s disco at the Tuesday Club, an Easter party, a summer outing, a social event in September and a Hallowe’en party.

Branch co-ordinator, Paula Larkin, said: “There are exciting plans for this year’s programme of events. We want to hold outdoor activities linked to the four seasons including a visit to an innovative cycling project called Free Wheel North which caters for people with special needs, a trip to the People’s Palace, a summer barbecue on the beach and an outing to Culzean Castle.

“We’d also like to go to Pollok Park and Pollok House.

“Our aim is to expand the learning opportunities and life experiences of our members and attract new and younger members from the learning and disabled community in the area.”

Milngavie and Bearsden Enable needs a new treasurer as well as events volunteers all year round to help with activities.

The positions are voluntary but expenses are covered and training is available.

The branch is also holding a tartan tea dance on May 6 at St Joseph’s Primary School when awards will be presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the branch.
